What’s Killing Startups in 2015? Burn Rates, Lawsuits

If it feels like a lot of startups have been closing up shop lately, your instincts might be correct. Analytics firm CB Insights estimates that in 2015, 34 startups have shuttered publicly. And, as CEO Anand Sanwal notes, “that number is likely to climb.”

Because many young companies shutter without fanfare, good data on how many startups close is hard to come by: CB Insights compiles closures globally by tracking public announcements and other signals like dormant websites. Another site, autopsy.io, tracks failed startups by trawling Medium, a popular venting space for entrepreneurs, and soliciting user submissions. But each may provide only a fraction of the complete picture, and finding such numbers on Bay Area-based startups can be even more tricky.
